The concept is taken from the book of James, in chapter 5, where it reads, "Is any one of you sick? Call the elders of the church to pray over you and anoint you with oil in the name of Jesus. And the prayer offered in faith will make you well; the Lord will raise you up ... therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."

Also in the prophetic book of Isaiah, in chapter 61, it says, "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners." A bit later, it speaks of "the oil of gladness instead of mourning."

This is talking about Jesus, and he gives this same anointing to minister healing, blessing and freedom to us.

In Mark chapter 6, we read about how Jesus anointed many sick people with oil and healed them (verse 13). In Matthew 10, we read that as disciples (followers) of Jesus, we are to do the same.

In my faith tradition, anointing people with oil during prayer ministry is a beautiful way to minister love, care, blessing and faith. Anointing oil doesn't "heal" per se, it is merely a symbol - it is the power of God that heals and the love of God that transforms. So there is nothing special or "magical" about the oil itself - it is merely used as a symbol in a setting where love and care is being ministered to someone in need, and prayer is being offered in faith in what Jesus has done and is doing.
