Here we offer cord burning bowls for a gentle, slow third stage, hand crafted by local artisan, Miss Potter.
Cord burning is way to sever the umbilical cord, an alternative to cutting the cord with sterile scissors, or Lotus Birth (when you don't cut the cord at all, but keep the placenta in a little placenta bag, covered in herbs and wrapped in cloths, until the cord dries up and drops off naturally.) The ends of cord are fully cauterized which is ideal for infection prevention. It usually takes about 10-20 minutes for the cord to burn through fully. There is a burning smell, so it's a good idea to have an open window nearby.
Cord burning is ideal for settings where delayed cord cutting is practiced and where naked flames (from the candles) are permitted.
